Payment and Rewards

Prolific Offers Fair Rewards!

Prolific promises that you won't get kicked out of surveys and you'll earn cash for your efforts - never points. Any rewards you gain to receive for your participation will be clearly outlined before participating in the study or survey. Prolific believes that everyone's time is valuable and asks researchers to reward participants with at least $6.50 per hour.

Get Paid Directly to Your PayPal Account

Prolific pays out in Sterling GBP and pays its panelists via PayPal. Ensure that the email you sign up with is the same email used for your PayPal account. You may request payment of your Rewards at any time, provided you have accumulated at least £5.00. If you're outside of the UK, you will still receive payments in GBP, but you can easily convert this into your local currency via your PayPal account.

Users who have unverified PayPal accounts do not generally appear to experience problems receiving their payments from Prolific; it appears that they issue payments to both verified and unverified PayPal payments alike.

Reasonable Approval Times

Survey submissions are reviewed by researchers before study rewards are credited to your account. This can take a few days, but you will not wait longer than 22 days to see your credit. Wait times for receiving Paypal payments after requesting them are no longer than a few days.

Community Features

Prolific is Socially Conscious

You can donate your rewards to charity! Help science and do good at the same time.

Although their registration page allows users worldwide who are 18+ to register with the site, many users outside of certain countries will receive a message on their dashboard that says that Prolific doesn't support the country they live in.

There are over 30 OECD countries that Prolific actually accepts members from. These include the UK, USA, CA, AU, IT, PL, CZ, among others.

Enjoyed Prolfic - Then They Dumped Me

December 5, 2020 by Harlan from United States

On September 1, 2020, I joined Prolific and, over the course of the next eight weeks or so, I participated in a little over 100 studies. Starting in November, I noticed that that no surveys were being offered to me. Late last week, one of their clients sent me a message encouraging me to participate in part two of a survey I had taken earlier. As I could find no way to access this survey and the client could offer no assistance, on December 3, 2020, I submitted a ticket to Prolific with the following information:

"I have not had a single study or survey come up on my Prolific feed for over a month now. Prior to this, I would generally see at least a half-dozen surveys appear each day. I contacted Prolific support awhile back and was told to be patient but, having received a message from a study coordinator inviting me to participate in a survey posted 12/1 which has never appeared on my feed, I now think that there is something technically wrong. I'd be happy to supply any additional info you may need."

On December 4, 2020, the Prolific Support Team replied as follows:

Thanks for getting in touch.

We carry out various types of automated checks on accounts to improve data quality. These include assessing responses to surveys and questions, checking the trustworthiness of ISPs, reports from researchers, as well as other factors.

I'm afraid you cannot participate in further studies on Prolific because your account has failed one or more of these checks. We are unable to disclose further information about these checks.

Prolific Support Team

Later on December 4, I replied:

"Thank you for your prompt reply to my inquiry. I am baffled, surprised, and upset. I have no idea what I have done to have been essentially banned from your site. I have answered all questions honestly and I have never violated any of your rules. Is there nothing I can do to appeal this decision - or at least get some idea of what may have caused this to happen? Thanks in advance for your reply."

To which the Prolific Support Team replied:

As mentioned previously, your account was flagged by our automated processes and subsequently reviewed by us. In light of our manual review, we have decided not to reinstate your account, and as such you will not be able to receive studies going forward.

We are unable to provide any further information about these checks, as they are integral to maintaining a high level of data quality.

So that's that? I successfully participate in many studies, even receive bonus payments for some of them, and then, without any reason whatsoever offered, I am suddenly kicked off the site and banned from further studies with no explanation given. I consider myself lucky to have arranged for a payout *before* they decided I was no longer worthy to participate.

This is a tremendous shame, as I had enjoyed the wide range of interesting polls being offered by Prolific. However, as an internet search reveals that this sort of action is being taken at random against any number of formerly happy and cooperative participants, I have to assume that Prolific no longer wants participants who dedicate themselves to taking their studies seriously. I only hope that their clients become aware of these unexplained punitive actions against participants and consider taking their business elsewhere.

1 full star!

If nothing else, I can't even go through the profile questions, I cannot put myself to go through the trouble it appears to be, it is very difficult for people whose hands and eyes cannot put the dots on the i first time... I don't even want to imagine how their survey layouts look like if that is their profile layout criteria. --- --- --- eg. postcode - it does not allow you to type the first letter of your postcode (to allow the drop-down menu to appear with the section relevant to that letter), you have to scroll down the whole section to get to the end and find your letter. The scroll bar of (each) profile window is so thin, same colour as the remaining of the window, so much so that I cannot distinguish it. So I had to restart all over again in some parts... --- --- --- My date of birth, I could not work out how to set it and finally I didn't realise it was wrong, now it's too late BUT YOU CAN DELETE IT, what? I did, and ..then?? contact...c-s?> Then, no matter if I did zoom in or out ... --- --- --- I then tried with my tablet, but the page froze (I did notice that even Chrome on my laptop was not very responsive with their profile sections); also tried Edge on my tablet but in vain. ------- FINALLY, that demo on their homepage? what was that about?? I tried it but wasted even more time. --- --- --- I've been on and off surveys for the past 20 years but this website is the worst profile I came across. 1 FULL STAR!

Closes accounts for no reason

July 26, 2022 by Alex from United States

They closed my account saying there automatic checks failed to confirm who I was and a manual review failed to confirm who I was after over a month of participating on the website refuse to give me any information of what caused me to fail their automatic checks and manual review I believe that the service is a sham at this point because they can't give me any information.

Dishonest, despicable & Vile site

September 30, 2021 by Christopher from United States

I have been a participant on Prolific for well over 2 years now. They were a good site - lots of interesting surveys and always paid reasonably and fairly quickly. I never had anyone expressing any problems with my work and my surveys were always approved by the people giving them.

But since July 2021 I stopped receiving any survey invites and no surveys were showing up on the site itself. I checked my profile status and there appeared to be no problems so I followed the advice on their FAQ and didn't contact them until 2 months had passed with no surveys whatsoever. When I did contact Prolific, it took them over a week to answer me and then I was told this:
'I'm afraid you won't be able to take part in further studies on Prolific because your account has failed one or more of our automated checks, as well as our manual review. Unfortunately, I can't give you any further information about the specifics of these checks and won't be able to reverse the decision.'

Unbelievable treatment from this site after several years of diligent and honest work. I've done nothing wrong whatsoever and now I'm suddenly banned without any warning or even the decency to let me know what's happened? Truly a despicable and vile site. Like all survey sites, they will ban you as soon as you start doing well without any explanation. Oh yeah, and they'll slander you as well without providing any proof of wrongdoing. Avoid this site at all costs unless you like being ripped off and insulted.

Horrible support, find elsewhere.

August 17, 2021 by Frank from United States

Was a good site for the years I used it, then out of no where I could no longer take any studies on my internet service provider. Support told me they "can't be sure that the internet connection you're using isn't a VPN or public network which can be used to disguise users' locations bringing into question the accuracy of the data researchers receive." When I've been on the same internet provider for years and my IP has not changed. As someone who is tech literate, you can easily check if an IP is a VPN or not, so it seems like an excuse and wish they would just be honest! Horrible support, some of the worst I've seen.
